All About Data

All About Data (5 courses)

What is Data? – In this course, you’ll learn how all the things you do on the internet come to your device in the form of data. Data is just a way of measuring how much you use the internet each month. For internet providers, quantities of data used determines how much to charge for an internet service. And data is part of how we know if an internet connection is fast or slow. In the following activities, you’ll learn what data is, why you need data, why you might want to buy more data, how to buy more data, and how data is measured.

Choosing a Data Plan – In this course, you’ll learn about how data for your internet connection is sold in a plan. You’ll find out how internet providers sell data to you, and what happens if you use too much data.

Managing Your Data – In this course, you’ll learn about managing your internet data plan, and the amount of data you use. If you stay aware of how much data you use each month, you can adjust your internet data plan, and maybe save some money. For instance, if you bought a small plan, but realise you need more data after all, you can change to a larger plan that lets you do more on the internet. You can also often change from a larger plan to a smaller plan, but this is more difficult and may incur some penalty charges. You’ll learn some of the tricks to managing your internet data plan, and how to watch out for extra charges. This course will also explain in more detail what happens if you use too much data.

Going Overseas – In this course, you’ll learn how you can stay connected and use the internet with your own mobile phone, even when you’re on holiday overseas. Having your own phone on an overseas trip can take a lot of the stress out of travel. You won’t need to find a public phone, and you’ll be able to access the information you want and your favourite sites, no matter where you are. This course will show you ways to help avoid a big data bill while travelling overseas. You’ll learn how to change the settings on your mobile phone, so it does not use any data while overseas, which is good if you’re travelling on a budget, and just want your phone for emergency calls.

Home Data vs Mobile Data – In this course, you’ll learn about how the data plan for a home internet account is separate from the data plan for a mobile phone account. You’ll learn that home internet plans usually include a lot of data, while mobile plans have less. This means it’s a good idea to connect your mobile phone to your home internet, over Wi-Fi, while you are at home. This course will explain how to do this in more detail.
