Explore the world of social media with the big names like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. We take an in-depth look at how you can safely create your own account in each of these platforms before going on to discover how you can find content of interest to you. You’ll also learn about some common social media scams and how you can protect yourself against them. Courses include:
Introduction to Social Media – You’ve probably heard the term social media – but what does it mean? Social media is a collective term used to describe the apps (short for applications, or programs) used on our computers or smart devices to communicate with each other and share information, ideas and interests. In times past, we met up in person at clubs and other social gatherings, or even picked up the phone to talk to each other. We can still do all of that of course, but we can also share information using our computers and smart devices as well. In the past 20 years, social media apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and others, have become ever more sophisticated, and even changed the way we interact with each other and the world. This course will familiarise you with the world of social media, including:
- How it works.
- The benefits of using social media.
- The major social media apps.
- Safety tips when using it.
Introduction to Facebook – Modern social media applications like Facebook allow us to communicate and share our thoughts, photos and videos with friends and family all over the world. Facebook is the world’s most widely used social media platform, and its popularity is only growing, with approximately 15 million active users in Australia alone! In this course, you’ll learn all about it, including what it is, how to create an account and how to set up important privacy and security settings.
Using Facebook – Once your Facebook profile has been created, and your privacy settings adjusted to suit you, it’s time to start using your profile to interact with friends, family and your community. In this course you will:
- take a guided tour of the features within Facebook
- learn about Facebook’s suggested posts and advertising on your News Feed
- find out how to identify possible scams on Facebook
- look at how to share content with others safely, and block or report inappropriate content; and
- discover how to connect with friends, join groups and post and respond to others on Facebook
Introduction to Instagram – This course will introduce you to the Instagram social media platform. You’ll learn what Instagram is used for and how you can safely create and enjoy using an Instagram account of your own. First, we have a short video to watch that demonstrates how you can create a new post in Instagram.
Introduction to Pinterest – This course introduces you to the Pinterest social media platform. You’ll learn what Pinterest is used for and how you can safely create and enjoy using a Pinterest account of your own. First, we have a short video to watch that demonstrates how you can create a Board within Pinterest and start saving Pins (or photos) to your Pinterest Board.
Introduction to Twitter – This course will introduce you to the Twitter social media platform. You’ll learn what Twitter is used for and how you can safely create and enjoy using a Twitter account of your own. This short video guides you through the process of creating a Tweet from your own Twitter account.
