Prepare to Setup – This course is the first of two steps for anyone who has just been given a pre-owned Windows laptop computer and wishes to learn how to prepare it for their own safe use. In this first step, you will learn how to erase the laptop and remove the previous owner’s details. This is known as a ‘reset’ and it must be completed before moving onto the second step, the Windows laptop: Set up course. By completing both courses, your laptop will be set up and ready to use. Naturally, you should only perform this reset on a laptop that has been given to you permanently, and not one that has been loaned to you temporarily. If you have a brand new laptop, or one that has already been reset, you can progress straight to the Windows laptop: Set up course.

Setup – This course is for anyone with a brand new Windows laptop computer, or a pre-owned Windows laptop computer that has been reset. If your laptop is pre-owned and has not yet been reset, you will first need to complete the steps in Windows laptop: Prepare to set up course. In this course, we will show you, step-by-step, how to set up your laptop in readiness to start using it safely.

Security & Privacy – This course is for anyone with a Windows laptop computer who wishes to learn more about its security and privacy features. We show you where to find these features and how to use them to help keep your computer and personal information safe. You’ll learn how to sign in securely, lock your computer when you’re not using it, and how to keep your software up-to-date.

Accessibility – This course is for anyone with a Windows laptop computer who wishes to learn how to use the built-in accessibility options to make their computer easier to use. We show you where to find these options (known as the Windows Ease of access menu), how to increase the size of text and images on the screen, make the mouse pointer easier to see, and how to use voice commands to perform tasks on your computer.

System Settings – This course is for anyone with a Windows laptop who wishes to learn more about their computer’s key settings. Settings such as screen brightness, volume, preferred language and the date and time are just a few that can be customised to suit your preferences. We show you where to find them and how to make them work just the way you like. We also show you how you can check your computer is correctly connected to your home Wi-Fi and how to reconnect if you need to.

Managing Files – This course is for anyone with a Windows laptop who wishes to learn how to keep information organised and use images to give their computer a more personal touch. In this course, we show you how to use folders to keep files grouped together for easy access, how to change your desktop background image, and how to set up a new profile picture for email and more.

Managing Attachments – This course is for anyone with a Windows laptop who wishes to learn how to safely manage files and documents attached to emails. It’s important to make sure email attachments don’t contain viruses or other unwanted software before you open them. In this course, we show you how to safely save and check an email attachment for viruses using the Windows Defender feature of Windows 10, how to attach a document to a new email, and how to share and print files you have received.

Managing Storage – This course is for anyone with a Windows laptop who wishes to learn how to make the most of the space on their laptop and keep it running smoothly. When a computer starts to run out of storage space, it can sometimes stop working efficiently. In this course, we show you how to maintain your computer’s health by using the Windows Storage Sense feature and the built-in Recycle bin to remove unwanted files. Plus, how to recover a file if you make a mistake, and how to use a separate storage device (called a USB stick) as a handy way to save space on your computer.
